#ModicInterview: Andu Marginean, keeping the harmony between architectural design and art
Andu Marginean is one of those special professionals that are still keeping the harmony between architectural design and art by practicing both of them at their finest. Recently, well known for designing Pope Francis’s chair and for his contribution to Black Sea’s seaside re-designing, Andu has one mod and chic portfolio of amazing and cozy projects but also wonderful paintings. After graduating the Fine Arts class at The University of Arts in Bucharest, he developed his very first project for Hilton, Ramada, Golden Tulip, being named “the harmony seller” by Forbes.
1. Tell us about yourself, who are you both as a person and as an artist?
Andu: After graduating, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. I understood that my future is brighter than a simple career. I consider myself to be in a mission where I have to accept challenges, to be responsible of my decisions, to fulfill them and to find the balance between what I have studied and what I desire, to identify the needs in a continuously fast-changing world.

2. Since last year, you have been teaching an architecture course. How did you receive this challenge and how does it feel to be a teacher?
Andu: It was something completely new for me and of course, an interesting challenge. I honestly did not expect it to be that difficult and complex. I tried to give to those who eager to explore as much valuable information as I could. Even though I worked on a platform that was well set up, I tried to bring new and valuable information to my students. I shared with them the aspects that professionals use on a daily basis and I hope that I managed to deliver both valuable energy and a pertinent message to those who were willing to learn more than basic information about this field.
3. How up-to-date are you with what design universities teach their students? Would you say that a course like yours could be enough for somebody to start a career in interior design?
Andu: In the world of design, as in other fields and professions, everything is constantly changing, moreover with an astonishing frequency. Still, the roots and the basic principle of the visual do not fluctuate, they are irreplaceable.
As I explained above, I do believe that if the talent and the vocation are present, what I teach students during my classes is more than enough to get started in this beautiful profession called “design”.
4. In order to succeed as an interior designer, do you think hard work could beat talent?
Andu: The work and the talent cannot substitute or replace one another. They are synergistic and distinctive.
5. We know that in fashion we have trend forecasting. How much of that science do you think could be applicable to interior design and architecture?
Andu: Practically we are talking about the same world, about the same universe of design that is driven to different directions. Of course, the so-called wave of trends can be predicted. The greatest satisfaction you can get is when you start using and applying your ideas and they match perfectly with what the market demands. This is something that happened to me many times during my career.
6. How has working in teams affected your artistic creation process? What are the steps you follow when given a new project?
Andu: In the profession of interior designer, in architecture, the teamwork is a necessity; it is something normal, like a phenomenon. The process of creation happens at first internally, in each and every one of us, the inspiration comes from every aspect of our lives. Later, it transforms into sketches that feed the process of creating the final project. Talking about my artistic mission, in its pure sense, it is a very different discussion. A subject that we can talk about in another interview.
7. Are you the type of artist to leave a symbolic touch in your creations? Has there ever been a hidden message in your artwork?
Andu: I think that every true and consistent artistic message offers a dose of symbolism that is deeply intertwined with the artistic message. In every act of our creation as human beings, there are messages that are more or less exposed. As long as the creation is not very explicit, it becomes a source of infinite interpretations in everyone’s mind and emotion.

8. What is your favorite style to design? Which of the existing styles do you enjoy working with the most and why? (Modern, contemporary, minimalist, industrial, Scandinavian, etc)
Andu: I believe in an eclectic expression formula involving adaptation to every style that has ever existed through history in order to satisfy the theme of every project.
9. What is one piece of advice you would give to the younger generation of designers?
Andu: I wish for the young ones, to open their eyes so they can find inspiration everywhere, to love life and to be passionate about it! Believe that creativity can be an infinite treasure, one that has no limits and makes everything is possible.
