In an era where fast fashion dominates the landscape, designer Chandra Keyser stands apart, driven by a passionate vision rooted in the contrasting energies of New York City and the serene beauty of the Italian countryside. This juxtaposition inspires her creations that embody elegance, craftsmanship, and a deep commitment to sustainability. Chandra believes in the transformative power of luxury and sees beauty as a reflection of both chaos and tranquility. By immersing ourselves in our surroundings, we can cultivate creativity and fulfillment in our passions, especially in the art of designing exquisite accessories.
Every piece crafted by Chandra is a testament to this philosophy. Handcrafted in Tuscany by master artisans, each accessory showcases meticulous attention to detail and the finest quality materials. The family-owned factory, now in its second generation, has been a bastion of sustainable practices and zero-waste principles since 1960. This enduring commitment to craftsmanship and ethical production serves as the foundation of Chandra’s work, emphasizing longevity and quality over the transient nature of modern consumerism.
The journey from concept to creation is intricate and steeped in tradition. It often begins with months of observation and research, where inspiration is cultivated through careful immersion in both the artistic and environmental elements of the world. This foundational step culminates in the “aha idea,” a moment of clarity that ignites the creative process. Following this revelation, Chandra turns to sketching, using the venerable method of pencil and paper. These initial drawings serve as blueprints, grounding contemporary designs in historical techniques. The selection of the right manufacturer is paramount. In an industry where family-owned factories have dwindled—from 300 to less than 20%—this choice not only ensures quality production but also supports a fading artisanal legacy. Chandra’s commitment to traditional patterns is evident in every aspect of creation, where hand-drawn patterns unite the creative intellect with hands-on artistry.
As the design evolves, the first prototype emerges, often made from Salpa—a soft, non-leather material that upholds sustainable principles. While some manufacturers have turned to modern technology for efficiency, Chandra chooses to embrace the tactile nature of traditional crafting techniques. This not only honors the heritage of Italian craftsmanship but also allows for a more intimate connection with the materials.
The meticulous selection process continues with the careful choice of premium leather sourced from acclaimed tanneries, particularly Santa Croce, famed for its luxurious offerings. Chandra takes great care in evaluating textures and types, understanding how each choice influences the final product. Choosing colors for the handbag collection is equally significant; Chandra visits tanneries and engages closely with material swatches, forging a direct connection to the essence of her creations.
Attention to detail is paramount throughout the entire process. From selecting decorative elements to the interior materials of each handbag, every decision carries weight. As Chandra notes, “The smallest decisions can have the biggest impact.” Each component must harmonize to elevate the handbag from a simple utility to a striking work of art. As the production phase begins, the careful assembly of components transforms the initial vision into reality. The original paper patterns guide the cutting of leather and structural materials, followed by meticulous stitching. This stage culminates as Chandra signs off on the first leather sample, marking a significant milestone—the birth of the handbag, ready to embark on its journey.
Even in packaging, sustainability remains a priority. Every bag is cleaned thoroughly, and recycled materials are employed in the packaging process, reinforcing the brand’s pledge to uphold eco-friendly practices. Special care is given to ensure each accessory arrives flawless; handles are wrapped to prevent scratches, and individual bags are placed in branded boxes made from recycled materials.
Yet, the journey does not end upon completion in the factory. Delivering these exquisite items to consumers across the ocean presents its own set of challenges. The logistics require seamless coordination, from the factory in Florence to customs in Milan and finally by ship from the port in Genoa. This intricate process reflects Chandra’s commitment to environmental responsibility and ensures that each piece reaches its customer in pristine condition.
Looking ahead, Chandra’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement grows stronger. Initiatives to plant trees through partnerships with the Arbor Day Foundation, along with the introduction of innovative materials like UPPEAL™—crafted from organic waste—illustrate her forward-thinking approach to luxury. Each accessory sold contributes to a larger mission of ecological stewardship, reinforcing the connection between artisan luxury and environmental consciousness.
As Chandra continues to weave a narrative that champions ethics and sustainability, the fashion industry is reminded of the importance of supporting brands that prioritize exceptional craftsmanship and responsible practices. Each handcrafted accessory is more than a stylish item; it represents a shift toward mindful consumption and an invitation to reassess our choices in fashion.
Through the blending of artistry and responsibility, Chandra invites us to explore the stories behind each piece—the artistry of Italian craftsmanship, the commitment to sustainability, and the celebration of luxurious living. In a world where values matter increasingly, these handcrafted luxuries enrich our lives while paving the way for a responsible and sustainable future. Embracing this vision reminds us that true luxury transcends fleeting trends and invites us to embrace a deeper connection with both the art of fashion and the world around us.
5 QUESTIONS WITH CHANDRA KEYSER
In what ways have the eco-friendly, zero-waste practices adopted by your family-owned factory since 1960 informed your brand’s principles and impacted your long-term aspirations?
Our long term vision is to adapt to the changing times while staying authentic to our values of no-waste, quality over quantity and prioritization of the environment. Italians are proud of their zero waste, sustainable and up-cycle practices. And so are we. Our master-craftsman understands and aligns with our values, with almost 50 years of experience, we are thrilled to work with a rare gem in Italy. While technology will improve many aspects of our business, we are committed to our core values, as is the factory.
Can you provide examples of how your brand consciously contributes to preserving theeconomy, society, and environment as part of your overall mission?
As a new brand, using traditional practices yet with a modern mindset, the economy, society and environment are all top of mind. And why we chose to focus on a model that supports a circular economy. As much as possible, we design consciously, recycle, create goods with local artisans supporting local economies and give back to the environment too.
An example of our full circle model is, our La Borsa da Vino. The vegan leather wine bag, is made from apples that are harvested in northern Italy, to produce apple juice, then 100% of the apple waste is transported to Florence, dehydrated and transformed into a new natural material that looks and feels like leather, yet is still exceptional quality material. La Borsa da Vino is meant to be gifted and reused. And with every wine bag we create, we plant trees with the Arbor Day Foundation, all part of our circularity 360 degree approach.
Looking ahead, what excites you the most about the evolution of your brand and the impact you aim to make within the luxury accessories sector and beyond?
I am most excited about change. As there is so much change happening on so many levels; culturally, locally, globally, geographically, economically, and technologically. I think it is important to embrace change, adapt and find ways to make things better. Change is one thing that is guaranteed and while it is not always easy, I believe those who can evolve with constant change, yet also stick to their mission and core values will be able to sustain the difficulties of change, and ultimately provide their customers goods that are relevant, of quality and timeless. As a new brand, we have experienced incredible change, in every aspect of our business. It would require an entire interview to get into the details. Yet, let’s just say “change” has become our strength and motivator to always strive to do better and continue to evolve — as an artist, business, brand and our offering of goods.
For example, changes that previously would take 10 years in this industry, we have changed in less than a year. The lessons from significant change has given us confidence to continue to evolve and is becoming part of our success.
How do you maintain a harmonious balance between commercial growth and sustainability initiatives as your brand expands, ensuring a socially responsible and environmentally conscious approach to business operations?
We make decisions based on the benefits and burdens it will have on humanity, and its affect on the environment. Sustainability is still a new and undefined term in the industry. Yet I think becoming knowledgeable, trying new materials, and evolving all practices allows a brand and business to experiment and find the right balance of between growth and doing good for all.
Can you shed light on the ways in which the artisanal production methods and use of premium materials in Tuscany create a compelling story behind each accessory, adding depth and meaning to the brand’s aesthetic? In what manner does your commitment to craftsmanship and quality play a role in influencing consumer perceptions andexperiences, particularly in a market saturated with mass-produced goods?
There are always 100 ways to do the same thing. And as an artist who stands firm on authenticity and transparency, from the beginning it was determined our differentiation was going to be focused on “artisanal production and quality materials”. And since both are becoming more scarce it helps us stand out from others. Truthfully it is a personal preference when a customer is buying luxury accessories, and what is of importance.
I always say handbags are like friends, you can have many friends with many different personalities and qualities. And that is the same with accessories. CHANDRA KEYSER brand is the loyal friend that you can count on to offer quality and Italian craftsmanship. We are inclusive of all. Wearing shoes from Zara and carrying a CHANDRA KEYSER bag is perfectly fine. There are no rules in fashion. Everything is a personal choice
