“New York, concrete jungle
Where dreams are made of
There’s nothing you can’t do
Now you’re in New York
These streets will make you feel brand new
Big lights will inspire you
Let’s hear it for New York New York, New York”.
– Empire State of Mind
After having been acquired by Michael Kors back in September, Versace took their Pre-Fall 2019 line straight to New York’s Financial District, where Donatella made sure that what would have been Gianni’s 72nd birthday would never be forgotten.
The glossy black runway was set around a Statue of Liberty torch replica, which, in the words of Donatella symbolized “enlightenment, empowerment and freedom”, nevertheless a new beginning for Versace.
However, it’s safe to say that the legacy of Versace is in good hands, as Donatella didn’t shy away from making an (over)statement as her brother used to and probably still would via vivid colourways, medusa pop-art prints, heart prints, head-to-toe zebra and camel prints and figure- hugging silhouettes draped with safety pins as an awe brought to Gianni’s iconic black and gold safety-pinned dress. The J.Lo Grammys 2000 barely-there dress also got to experience a revival this time being covered in tiny colorful hearts.
Modic Interview: Giovanni Ottonello: „We must change our behaviours and design a New Fashion for the Future!”
As New York itself is a concrete jungle bringing together cultural diversity, so is Versace’s new line. There’s something for everyone, whether you’re the downtown or uptown fashionista.
