In Memory of Françoise Gilot.
( 26 / 11 / 1921 – 6 / 6 / 2023 )
In 1943, Gilot maintained a 10-year romantic relationship with Picasso.
Gilot, became the only one of Picasso’s lovers or wives ever to leave him. After the breakup, Gilot rebuilt her life in a remarkable way. They exhibit her work at the MoMA in New York, the Metropolitan, and the Pompidou Centre in Paris. Gilot was an independent thinker, who refused to pander to male authority and thought that art springs chiefly from what is inside artists rather than what’s in front of them. She was a woman in the mid-20th century who pursued a career in art, had as a partner one of the artists of all times, and children.
Gilot passed away in June 2023 at 101 years old. This project is an homage to her and to all the pioneer women who in their lives were “behind the wolf”, on the shadows and found it challenging to develop their potential and be independent. It is also dedicated to every individual who faced similar obstacles in life and found themselves “on the shadow of someone”
